The Voice alum Dylan Carter’s cause of death has been revealed following his fatal car accident at age 24.
Carter died of blunt force injuries sustained in the accident, Colleton County Coroner Richard M. Harvey confirmed to PEOPLE. TMZ was first to report the news.
The singer was wearing a seatbelt when he crashed, and his death was ruled accidental.
A spokesperson for the South Carolina Highway Patrol told PEOPLE there was a single-car crash on the evening of April 25 involving a 2026 Tesla.
Corporal Nick Pye said the Tesla left the road and struck a curve, utility pole and fence before overturning. The driver, whom he did not identify, died later at a local hospital, and the collision remains under investigation.

Carter’s death was confirmed in a Facebook post by Thomas Hamilton Jr., the mayor of Moncks Corner, S.C.
“Our family is heartbroken to hear about the passing of Dylan Carter in a car accident,” Hamilton wrote on April 26. “As a gifted singer, he frequently entertained our community with his performances at Town events. His kindness and charm earned him immense respect, and his absence will be deeply felt.”

The singer was predeceased by his mother Julie in October 2022, and spoke about her during his time on The Voice on season 24 in 2023.
Carter’s blind audition of “I Look to You” by Whitney Houston earned him chair turns from all four coaches — Gwen Stefani, John Legend, Niall Horan and Reba McEntire — and he ultimately chose Team Reba before being eliminated during battle rounds.

In the years after the show, Carter continued to perform and also became a licensed realtor in South Carolina.
“After turning four chairs on The Voice and choosing Reba as my coach, I have decided to chase a music career and become known as a realtor by day and singer/songwriter by night!” he wrote on his Carolina Properties biography. “Chasing a music career is hard nowadays so I am hoping that my real estate career will fund and allow me to chase my dreams!”
McEntire, 71, paid tribute to Carter after his death on her Instagram Stories.
“We will miss Dylan so much. He was a brilliant, kind and talented young man who brought a huge ray of sunshine to The Voice,” she wrote. “Rest in peace, my dear friend.”
