Actress Carrie Fisher, who died on Dec. 27, 2016, was incredibly close with her mother, actress Debbie Reynolds, who died one day later, on Dec. 28, 2016 — and both doted on Fisher’s daughter Billie Lourd, herself an actress and now a mother to sonĀ Kingston Fisher, 6, and daughterĀ Jackson Joanne, 3.

In the years since their deaths, Lourd has kept their memory alive with sweet tributes on Instagram, as well as sharing their work with her children — including screening Star Wars, in which Fisher played Princess Leia, for her children on Star Wars day last year.

On the anniversary of Fisher’s death last December, Lourd (whose father is Fisher’s ex Bryan Lourd) shared how her children helped her manage her grief.

While has previously opened up about how her death anniversary is sometimes like ā€œan emotional tropical stormā€ that ā€œpours rain a lot of the day,ā€ the actress has also shared how losing her mother has helped her relish the happy moments in life as well.

On what would have been Fisher’s 70th birthday today, look back at sweet photos of Lourd with Fisher and Reynolds, whom she has described as her ā€œfavorite people.ā€

ā€œI’m a very distinct personality, definitely different from both of them,ā€ Lourd told PEOPLE of her mother and grandmother. ā€œWell, it’s something you learn through generations. I think I’ve learned to balance my life and my work in a different way than they were able to do, and that was also a product of the times.ā€

On the fifth anniversary of Fisher’s death, Lourd wrote a post about her grief, including a powerful bit about listening to the song ā€œLandslideā€ and having it affect her differently now.

ā€œWe loved to sing. We loved Fleetwood Mac,ā€ she wrote. ā€œWe loved this song. It echoed in our living room throughout my childhood, playing slightly too loudly as she scribbled her marvelous manic musings on yellow legal pads ... I didn’t know who to be or what to do after my mom died. I was afraid of changing because I had built my life around her. Then she was gone. And I had to rebuild my life without her. And it wasn’t (and still isn’t) easy. But time has made me bolder. I never stop missing her but I have gotten stronger with each passing year.ā€

In 2019, Lourd shared this photo with the following caption: ā€œHappy holidays! (But also sad/emotional/weird/stressful holidays!) Sending my love to everyone who has lost someone they loved and is missing them a little extra today. I see you. It’s okay if everything ain’t all merry and bright. It can be a mix of all of it. And it’s all okay. Feel all the feelings - the good and the not so good. Eat something delish they used to love. Put on one of their favorite songs. Tell a story about them. Cry about them. Call one of their friends you haven’t talked to in a while. Be kind and patient with yourself.ā€

Nothing But Love

Though they were incredibly close while raising Lourd, Reynolds and Fisher did have a complicated relationship as a result of Reynolds’ stardom while Fisher was young, including an estrangement in the 1980s.

ā€œIt took like 30 years for Carrie to be really happy with me,ā€ Reynolds told PEOPLE in 1988. ā€œI don’t know what the problem ever was. I’ve had to work at it. I’ve always been a good mother, but I’ve always been in show business, and I’ve been onstage, and I don’t bake cookies, and I don’t stay home.ā€

ā€œToday I am griefful (griefy but grateful). I watch the magic that is my son and daughter and I know she is a piece of that magic. And I feel all the things. The grief. The joy. The longing. The magic. The emptiness. The fullness. And it all coexists in a profound way. Sending my love to everyone out there who needs it,ā€ Lourd captioned this photo on the anniversary of her mother’s death.

ā€œMy mom would’ve been 68 today. Dead person birthdays are weird to say the least. On my mom’s birthday every year, I try to celebrate her as much as possible, but today I really wanted to celebrate her with her,ā€ Lourd captioned this photo.

Lourd told PEOPLE she credited her mother and grandmother for her acting chops. ā€œI’d say definitely the comedy is in the genetics. They were better at it than me. I can do a fair bit of tap dancing, not as good as ... young Debbie Reynolds, but that’s also in the genes, although my mom kind of sucked at tap dancing,ā€

Leia has become a family heirloom, and not just for my family.ā€

Lourd told PEOPLE that while she initially tried to create a unique path for herself from her famous predecessors, since their death, she loves that acting brings her closer to them.

ā€œI guess I just tried to separate myself from them while they were alive and now I feel like I kind of I am kind of trying to do the opposite. I try to connect myself to them because I miss them.ā€

Over There

For Mother’s Day 2026, Lourd shared this sweet throwback photo and reflected on how grieving her mother has made her appreciate life and all the joyful in a different way.

ā€œLosing my mom at such a young age has given me an appreciation for all the joy in life I never had before,ā€ she wrote, in part. ā€œAnd an understanding that all that joy would not exist if my mom did not exist. And my life wouldn’t be what it is if I did not lose her when I did.ā€

She continued, ā€œI miss her every single day but her magic is with me every day through the magic that is the life I’ve created with my husband and children. She is just like the thing she loved the most - glitter - we will thankfully never be able to wash her off and she makes our lives sparkle every single day.ā€
