Khadijah Haqq is getting candid about participating in the new reality TV series, The Girls, with friends

The Hulu series stars Haqq alongside her twin sister Malika, Nicole Williams English, Yris Palmer, Olivia Pierson and Natalie Halcro

The Girls premiered on Hulu on Friday, Aug. 21

Fans of The Kardashians may know Khadijah Haqq as one of KhloĆ© Kardashianā€˜s best friends. But in The Girls, viewers can see her in a new light.

Khadijah, 43, stars in the new Hulu reality series alongside her twin sister Malika and several other women in Kardashian’s inner circle, including Yris Palmer, Nicole Williams English, Olivia Pierson and Natalie Halcro. The Girls, which premiered on Friday, Aug. 21, follows the six women as they navigate the ā€œhighs and lowsā€ of motherhood, marriage and life in the spotlight.

The TV personality says being part of the reality series with friends she’s known ā€œfor yearsā€ was enjoyable, but it wasn’t without its challenges.

ā€œThe opportunity Khloé’s given us is that now, we’re working friends, and there’s a professional layer to that. And then it’s shooting reality television,ā€ she tells PEOPLE. ā€œThere’s a lot of vulnerabilities and discomforts, and we’re trying to mingle and coexist in that new reality space. So it’s new for us.ā€

Khadijah and Malika got their first taste of reality stardom when they appeared on Keeping Up with the Kardashians in its early seasons, and went on to star in their own reality series, Dash Dolls in 2015. Since the premiere of The Kardashians in 2022, the twin sisters have appeared as recurring guests.

Though they’ve had experience filming reality TV, Malika says The Girls has allowed them to share more of themselves and their personal lives.

ā€œKhadijah and I grew up in front of the camera. We started off acting, and moving into reality TV was because of our relationship with KhloĆ©,ā€ she says. ā€œI think every day that you film is something different and unpredictable. It makes it like an addictive thing.ā€

ā€œBut this will be the first time that we’ve really shared more of the layers of our individual lives. We’re very honest about that. I don’t think you should do reality television if that’s a curtain you don’t want opened.ā€

Malika teases that viewers will see them in more ā€œvulnerableā€ moments, like Khadijah navigating her divorce with ex-husband Bobby McCray and the twins raising their children together. ā€œAll of those layers are new, not because of the camera, but just because of where we are in life now,ā€ she says.

The ā€œemotional pieceā€ of filming their new series, Khadijah adds, was surprising. ā€œI’m a pretty emotional person, especially when it comes to my personal life,ā€ she says. ā€œI appreciated the vulnerability and how emotional the other ladies were.ā€

Over the course of filming, Khadijah says the shared openness among the women allowed them to grow closer and deepen their relationships.Ā ā€œIt’s been really nice because you can have a great relationship with your friends and know them for years, but it’s just like anything else. You never stop learning,ā€ Khadijah says. ā€œYou can learn within your relationships and your friendships, too.ā€

The Girls is now available on Hulu.
