Britt Lower is opening up about one of her lesser-known passions.

At the Golden Globes First-Time Nominee Celebration at The Maybourne in Beverly Hills on Dec. 17, the Severance star, 40, told PEOPLE about her love of the circus.

"The circus is just a place where I genuinely love to go, to be in a sense of awe and wonder," says Lower. "And I enjoy performing on stage sometimes with circuses, but I also really love being an audience member and just experiencing the wonderment of the human spirit in these incredible feats, like someone walking across the tightrope happening in real time."

"It brings you into the present moment much like being in nature and just being present with the elements," she continues. "It's one of my favorite things to be involved with."

Lower previously told PEOPLE in 2022 that while on hiatus from Severance, she joined a "one-ring circus and performed for a whole month as a character named Steven, who played the ukulele."

"I got to perform with the Flying Wallenda family, the tightrope walkers," she said. "It was just a lifelong dream come true to be performing alongside my heroes."

In 2019, Lower also wrote, directed and starred in a short film called Circus Person, which is currently being developed into a feature film. The film follows a woman who spontaneously joins the circus after going through a heartbreak.

At the upcoming Golden Globe Awards on Jan. 11, Lower will be up for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Television Series – Drama, for her role playing Helly R./Helena Eagan in season 2 of Severance.

At the luncheon, she was joined by fellow first-time nominees, including her Severance costar Tramell Tillman, along with Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Monica Padman, Chase Infiniti, Eva Victor and Rhea Seehorn.

"It's a huge privilege to be named amongst these incredible artists right next to me," Lower tells PEOPLE. "I'm really just savoring it and taking it in."

As for what she learned about herself filming season 2 of Severance, Lower says, "I feel like I could answer this probably all day long."

"I think with any role, when you step into someone else's perspective, you gain empathy for their triumphs and their mistakes," she says. "My job as an actress is to really honor their journey, whether they're making the decisions that are best for them or not."

Lower adds that the show "is really such an exploration of what it is that makes us human."

"Sometimes our greatest enemies is that inner critic within, and that inner child is fighting to get out," she says. "So, I think any character I ever encounter from now on, I will think about those two sides and which one is allowed to have a voice."

As for what's to come next for Helly and Helena in season 3, Lower says she's in the dark "like everyone else."

"I'm in the great sense of anticipation," she says. "Because Helly and Helena are such complex parts of the same woman, I'm always curious to know what they have to learn from one another and how they evolve."
