2026 has been a notable year for Hollywood, with both big-budget sequels and surprise indie films igniting the box office.

Follow-up titles like Spider-Man: Brand New Day and Toy Story 5 have earned spots among the top 10 movies of the year so far. But some lesser-known films have also made a major impact, including the horror hit Obsession, which became an unexpected box-office sensation.

During its opening weekend, the film grossed $17 million and afterward, it steadily gained steam on social media, eventually leading it to gross about $500 million worldwide against a budget that was less than $1 million.

“When it made $27 million, I couldn’t believe it,” Obsession director Curry Barker told The Hollywood Reporter in June 2026. “I didn’t know that was an option. Like, I didn’t think it was mathematically possible. It became a word-of-mouth movie. I started going to the theater to sneak in and watch the film too because I wanted to be part of this thing.”

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is currently the highest grossing movie of 2026 and the second-fastest movie ever to gross $1 billion worldwide, reaching the milestone just six days after its theatrical release.

The film follows an isolated Peter Parker, now without his advanced tech or Avengers support, as he fights crime in a world that has forgotten his identity while confronting a telepathic threat no one can see.

Members of the franchise’s first three films, including Tom Holland and Zendaya, reprised their roles, while newcomers, including Sadie Sink, made their Spider-Man debut.

As a result of the film’s box-office explosion, TheWrap reported that Holland is expected to make “upwards of $100 million” through a combination of his $20 million base salary and backend bonuses.

Holland told PEOPLE in July 2026 that “the biggest responsibility of making these movies” is giving fans someone they can look up to. “He’s been a role model to me since I was a young kid, and even since I started playing him. So it’s a responsibility that I don’t take lightly,” he said.

Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey earned $264 million worldwide in its first weekend, quickly becoming one of the year’s biggest movies and a major hit in IMAX.

The project marked the director’s biggest global opening, buoyed by an all-star ensemble cast of Holland, Zendaya, Matt Damon and Anne Hathaway, among others.

Disney’s Toy Story 5 became the third film of the year to cross the billion-dollar mark worldwide.

The film follows Woody, Buzz, Jessie and the rest of the toys as they find themselves competing for love and attention in a new age dominated by technology.

When the film premiered in June 2026, it earned $132 million globally and $160 million domestically in its first weekend, making it the biggest Toy Story opening in the franchise’s history.

The movie’s original song, “I Knew It, I Knew You” by Taylor Swift, also became a chart-topper, debuting at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and breaking numerous streaming records.

Helping the film score big was its ensemble voice cast that includes Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Jack Black and Brie Larson, among many others.

The film amassed $369.3 million in its first six days and maintained its hold on the top spot at the China box office in the following weeks, per Variety.
