The March 2 episode of Paradise season 2 broke fans hearts as a major character died

Dan Fogelman's hit Hulu series sees Xavier (Sterling K. Brown) search for his wife, Teri, in the world outside the bunker in season 2

Shailene Woodley made a bold entrance into the world of Paradise in the season 2 premiere, and she made just as bold an exit.

In the Monday, March 2 episode of the hit Hulu series, Woodley's Annie gave birth to her and Link's (Thomas Doherty) baby before taking her last breath. Annie had gotten through several years of medical school, so she knew what was coming for her, as she'd been suffering from several side effects of preeclampsia — namely, high blood pressure and blurred vision —and after giving birth, suffered from excessive bleeding as she failed to deliver her placenta.

While Annie had come to terms with what would happen, Xavier (Sterling K. Brown) was taken aback — and then she charged him with bringing her baby girl back to the bunker to find Link, as she gave him a letter she'd written for the baby. She then died in Xavier's arms.

"You will not let her be afraid of people," Annie told Xavier before she died. "Promise me. Xavier, this is your Holy Charge."

Woodley, 34, said she left the set "utterly exhausted" after filming the birth and death scene. “We gave all of ourselves," she told Decider.

“We spent some time choreographing and rehearsing the scene, so we knew physically where our bodies would be in space. But other than that, Sterling and I kind of looked one another in the eye and had this unspoken agreement that we were going to really hold space for each other."

Annie's death was on her own terms and peaceful, in a way, Woodley told The Hollywood Reporter.

"Because she was medically trained, she knew what the consequences of giving birth could be. But seeing her daughter, looking her in the eyes, holding her young body, and seeing that she was healthy and that she was going to have the fortitude to move forward in life in a way that Annie didn’t, I think, gave her a peace and an acceptance that’s so primal and deeply rooted," the actress said.

"I don’t have children yet, but I would imagine it’s deeply rooted in the womb of a woman, this idea of carrying life forward and giving life forward. I think Annie was able to leave with a sense of peace, and because her nature is to be a nurturer, she left on a high note because she was able to be of service to those around her even as her last breath was being taken."

Woodley is now excited to see the remainder of the season unfold, as she said she "had purposely not asked a lot of questions" about the other characters' arcs. "I am excited to have it be revealed in real time with my friends on the couch watching," she told the outlet.

She did ask, though, about Doherty's character for the baby's sake. "I know more about Link than I know about Xavier or Sinatra," she said. "Only because of the nature of our relationship in the show and the baby, Dan did tell me the extension of that storyline and where the baby goes."

She's also hopeful that, despite Annie's death, she could return for season 3 of the series. “I would love that. I would really, really love that,” she told Decider.

“The joke I would always say was, ‘Thank God it’s a Dan Fogelman show,’ because he does tend to bring people back over and over again.”
