Kristin Davis revealed a memorable Golden Globes experience while chatting with PEOPLE at the awards' Golden Eve event on Jan. 6

She says she didn't recognize Tom Cruise at the 2004 Golden Globes and wondered why her Sex and the City costars were "talking to some dude"

She notes that Cruise was "incredibly nice" about the blunder even though she "felt so dumb"

One of Kristin Davis’ most memorable celebrity run-ins turned out to be a simple case of mistaken identity.

At the Golden Globes' Golden Eve event on Tuesday, Jan. 6, the actress, 60, reflected on her past experiences attending the iconic awards show. Davis tells PEOPLE that in 2004, she had a somewhat embarrassing encounter with Tom Cruise while rushing to the red carpet for photos with her Sex and the City costars, Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon and Kim Cattrall.

“HBO always wanted the four of us to be together to have a group photo, which is really hard with the traffic and everything,” Davis explains. “So, I was stressed. I was a little bit late for the four-shot, and I had just seen [The Last Samurai] movie, and [Cruise’s] hair was long. So, I had just watched that one, and I didn't know he'd cut his hair back off short.”

“I'm hurrying down the press line to join the other three, and I see that they're talking to some dude,” she continues. “I'm like, ‘Why is there a guy in my spot?’ ”

In that moment, Davis says she assumed the mystery man was a talent agent, leaving her confused about why he was posing for photos with her castmates.

“So I go up behind him, at which point he turns, and it’s Tom Cruise,” she laughs. “I grab his arm and jump up and down like I'm trying to rip his arm out of his shoulder blade. And then, really stupidly, I say, ‘I didn't recognize you.’ And he says, ‘You didn't recognize me?’ And I'm like, ‘Well, I just watched The Samurai and your hair was long.’ So, stupid, right?”

She adds, “I felt so dumb, but he was so incredibly nice. And then we all took pictures and he told us all how much he loved the show, so it was great.”

In the more than two decades since, the Melrose Place alum has seen Cruise, 63, again and says “he's super sweet.”

On the topic of her SATC family, Davis — who was at the event to present Sarah Jessica Parker with the Carol Burnett Award — also revealed how she feels about news that the show’s revival series And Just Like That
won’t be returning for a fourth season.

When asked about the season 3 conclusion and whether it brought a close to the chapter for her, Davis quickly replies, "No.”

The spinoff’s unexpected series finale aired on HBO Max in August after the show first premiered in December 2021. It followed the beloved SATC ladies — Carrie Bradshaw (Parker), Miranda Hobbes (Nixon) and Charlotte York Goldenblatt (Davis) — 10 years after fans last saw them in the 2010 film Sex and the City 2. Original star Kim Cattrall, who played Samantha Jones, only returned for a one-episode cameo.
