Kathy Griffin got candid about her dating life following her split from ex-husband Randy Bick in a new essay
The 65-year-old comedian shared that she had a relationship with an unnamed 23-year-old man
Griffin said that though it didn't ultimately last she was "really in love"
Kathy Griffin is once again opening up about her love life.
The 65-year-old comedian split from husband Randy Bick in 2023 and shared in a new essay for The Cut published on Wednesday, Dec. 31 that she hasnāt seen or had contact with Bick in two years.
And Griffin noted that her split didnāt keep her from dating. āI accidentally fell in love with a 23-year-old,ā she shared. āBecause of his age, he didnāt have the usual sexism, misogyny, and biases that guys my age tend to have. He seemed to see me. I know that sounds really corny. Oh God, it sounds so lame! But I felt really comfortable with him, and I felt very content just hanging out.ā
Despite noting that it ānever couldāve lasted,ā Griffin said, āI really was in love with him. He touched my heart.ā

The reality TV star, who finalized her divorce from Bick in January 2025, said that the romance helped her discover that she was still capable of this kind of love.
āIt was nice to know that my heart could still feel like that in my 60s, and it was nice to have the universe show me a guy that I really got a kick out of but also respected,ā she mused. āI thought he was smart. I thought he could roll in different worlds. It sounds clichĆ©, and maybe he was an old soul, but I donāt know, we just clicked. And that click thing? It doesnāt happen all that much.ā
The moment Griffin decided that her unnamed mystery man was ātoo youngā happened when he told her he ānever wanted to have kids and that he could be with me forever.ā
āI was like, āYou donāt know that. Youāre 23. You have no idea,ā ā she recalled. āI just wouldnāt do that to him. I mean, when I was 23, I thought I knew a lot of s---, but I didnāt. So I had to set that dove free.ā

And while Griffin claimed she knew the relationship wouldnāt work out, she added, āWe gave it a shot anyway, and we both went with it for a while, and then it came time to go.ā
The 42-year age difference might seem large, but Griffin noted that she hasnāt dated someone her age since her 30s. āI donāt know what it is, but my ex-husband was 18 years younger than me. Pretty much since then, Iāve only been asked out by younger guys,ā she explained. āSo Iām constantly called a cougar, but I donāt mind. I kind of am a cougar, which to me just means you have the freedom to choose the person that you want as opposed to the age bracket that society tells you is the only option for you.ā
Discussing online dating, Griffin shared that she put in her real age on her profile and didnāt have a single date with anyone who wasnāt āat least 20 years younger,ā quipping, āWhat am I gonna do? I canāt let this banginā body go to waste.ā

And though she's open to dating now, Griffin told PEOPLE in October that her divorce from Bick proved to be an emotional challenge. "My divorce took me out," she said. "I'm not going to lie. Some people are like, 'I was glad I got rid of them, and I've never felt better.' I was down for the count. It was harder than cancer."
Back in November, Griffin also opened up to PEOPLE about her post-divorce dating life, sharing that she has tried out four different online dating apps in her quest to find a match. āI'm on four freaking apps. It's just embarrassing,ā the comedian said at the time. āI've gone on three different dates so far. They were all nice guys, but I didn't really feel the connection. I just think it's funny that I'm on there as myself anyway.ā
