Former Vice President Kamala Harris and her husband, Doug Emhoff, are celebrating 12 years of marriage.

They both marked the occasion on Instagram on Aug. 22 by sharing photos from their 2014 wedding. Harris’ post featured a photo of the couple smiling as they appeared to be listening to a speech during their reception. Another photo showed the two posing together on a balcony in their formal wedding attire.

“Happy anniversary to the best partner I could ask for,” the former presidential candidate, 61, wrote in the caption. “I love you so very much, Dougie.”

Emhoff’s anniversary post featured a photo of a wedding album displaying shots of Harris in her gown and veil, including one image in which she’s surrounded by three young flower girls and a ring bearer.

“Time to check the wedding album again!” Emhoff, also 61, wrote. “An amazing 12 years. Whatever comes our way, we are always in it together. Love you Kamala!”

Harris and Emhoff first met in 2013 when they were set up on a blind date by Harris’ friend, Chrisette Hudlin. The attorney later revealed that it was “love at first sight” for him.

“Blind date, love at first sight, marriage, family, and an incredible life together,” Emhoff wrote on X in 2020 for Harris’ birthday. “Through it all, no matter what, she is ALWAYS there for me and our family without hesitation.”

In her 2019 memoir, The Truths We Hold, Harris recalled that Emhoff reached out the very next day to arrange additional dates.

“The morning after our first date, Doug emailed me with a list of his available dates for the next couple of months,” she wrote. “ ‘I’m too old to play games or hide the ball,’ the email read. ‘I really like you, and I want to see if we can make this work.’ ”

Less than a year later, Emhoff proposed, and the pair tied the knot on Aug. 22, 2014, in a small courthouse ceremony in Santa Barbara, Calif., performed by the bride’s younger sister, Maya. Harris officially became stepmother to Emhoff’s two children, Cole and Ella.

In an interview with The New York Times in January 2021, Cole and Ella shared their take on Harris and Emhoff’s relationship.

“Doug and Kamala together are like almost vomit-inducingly cute and coupley. I’m like, ‘When is this going to wear off?’ ” Cole, 31, said.

Ella, 27, added, “It’s so insane. It’s like the honeymoon phase forever. Like, the rest of the world gets to see it on social media, but we live that.”

Two years into her marriage to Emhoff, Harris was elected to the U.S. Senate, representing California. Then, in January 2021, Emhoff was by her side as she was sworn in as the country’s first female vice president. He also supported her during her two presidential campaigns.

Speaking with PEOPLE in 2023 about balancing their married life with Harris’ role as vice president, Emhoff said he and Harris stayed connected by beginning and ending their busy days together.

“We try to approach those moments as husband and wife, not vice president and second gentleman,” he explained. “It’s really our time to be a couple ... time talking about kids, family and very little about the workings of our days.”

On the couple’s eighth wedding anniversary, Emhoff described their life together as “an adventure.”

“What an adventure these past eight years have been,” he wrote on social media in 2022. “Through it all, you have loved and supported me and our family with everything you have. Life is better with you by my side.”
