Jimmy Kimmel has turned the firing demand into a rhetorical boomerang. After President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump publicly called for ABC to fire the late-night host, Kimmel responded by arguing that if his joke warranted that, then the president should face the same consequence, as he himself made a quip about his own longevity recently.
Jimmy Kimmel jokes about Donald Trump in new monologue
The back and forth between Kimmel and President Trump traces back to an April 23 segment in which Kimmel staged a mock White House Correspondents’ Association dinner speech. During the sketch, the comedian described Melania Trump as an “expectant widow.” The line sat largely unnoticed until a real shooting incident happened at the actual correspondents’ dinner days later. Suddenly, Kimmel’s scripted joke made a comeback and was condemned as a call for action.
Rather than retreat, Jimmy Kimmel returned to his April 28 broadcast and talked about a video of Donald Trump. The clip showed the president alongside King Charles III, musing about his parents’ 63-year marriage. Further, he told Melania, “That’s a record we won’t be able to match, darling,” insinuating that the president and his wife, married for 21 years, would not live long enough to surpass.

Kimmel retorted, saying. “Wait a minute. Did he just make a joke about his death?” the host asked. “He should be fired for that! Only Donald Trump would demand I be fired for making a joke about his old age, and then a day later, go out and make a joke about his own old age!” Kimmel further said. The comedian branded the backlash a manufactured uproar, calling those amplifying the controversy “ridiculous.”
Notably, last September, ABC suspended the host temporarily after Federal Communications Commission chair Brendan Carr allegedly pressured the network over another set of remarks. This time, the response from Disney seemingly differs. Under newly appointed CEO Josh D’Amaro, who assumed the role just over a month ago, the company has so far allowed Kimmel to proceed with broadcasts as planned.
