The Foo Fighters concert on Wednesday, Jan. 14 kicked off with an at-home video from guitarist Pat Smear

The band announced that Pat Smear suffered a freak accident earlier this month and would be missing some shows
Though Pat Smear has to sit out a few Foo Fighters shows after experiencing a freak accident, the band still managed to include him at their Los Angeles show.
On Wednesday, Jan. 14, the rock band kicked off their concert at the Kia Forum with a special video from Smear, 66.
"Ladies and gentlemen, a message from Pat Smear," a deep voice announced to the crowd.

Then, Smear's foot — which is shielded by a cast and propped up — appeared on a large screen and the camera flipped around to show Smear resting on a couch.
"Happy birthday, Dave, sorry I could not be there," he said to frontman Dave Grohl — who turned 57 on Wednesday — before introducing the band to the crowd.
The band proceeded to walk out and Grohl told the crowd, "We're gonna start this off right."
"We’re gonna sing one for Pat Smear," he said, before playing their 1998 song "My Hero."
"He’s my hero," Grohl yelled out.
The band announced Smear's "bizarre gardening accident" in a Jan. 7 Instagram post, which featured Smear on the cover of a hilarious faux tabloid that read "breaking news."
"BREAKING NEWS! In the classic tradition of rockstars having bizarre gardening accidents, Pat Smear has apparently rung in the new year by smashing the s--- out of his left foot," the band captioned the post. "This means he’ll unfortunately be missing a few shows while the multiple broken bones in his foot heal."

They added, "We’ll miss our beloved Pat as much as you will, but we want him fully healed and back on his feet as soon as possible."
While Smear is on the mend, Jason Falkner, who plays guitar for artists like Beck and St. Vincent, is filling in.
Up next, the band will play a show in Australia on Jan. 24 and will take a break before hitting the road again in May through the end of September.
