Pittsburgh Steelers captain Cameron Heyward criticized the Eagles for allowing quarterback Jalen Hurts to play despite a diagnosed blood clot.
When news surfaced that Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts played through a diagnosed calf blood clot in London with virtually no sleep, the NFL world was stunned. But for Pittsburgh Steelers defensive leader and 16-year veteran Cameron Heyward, the situation transcended football strategy; it exposed a fundamental flaw in the league's handling of player safety.
Speaking on his podcast “Not Just Football with Cam Heyward,” Heyward pulled no punches regarding the organization's decision-making. As an executive leader within the NFL Players Association (NFLPA), Heyward argued that teams have an obligation to protect players from their own competitive drive when serious health risks arise.
"And sometimes you need your coach and your team to protect the player," Heyward said. "That did not happen here. And that is - I understand winning, and that's one thing I've always, you know, you look at a situation with like Ryan Clark and Mike Tomlin: protect the player from himself. And if you don't do that, something scarier is going to happen."

Heyward referenced how Steelers former head coach Mike Tomlin famously held safety Ryan Clark out of games in Denver due to Clark's sickle cell trait, prioritizing human life over competitive advantage. In contrast, the handling of Hurts highlighted a troubling disconnect between the league's player safety rhetoric and its on-field reality.
"It's not felt that—and I hate to say it—but a fantasy score is more important or a win is more important than that player's life," Heyward expressed. "And that is a scary thing to think about. We leave our house expecting to be back the next day. We never expect to be in the hospital or be in a situation where I could be fighting for my life."
Heyward’s candid assessment serves as a stark reminder that while players will naturally push to stay on the field, franchise leadership must ultimately uphold a higher duty of care.
