*The Princess Diaries 3* is inching closer to its happily-ever-after — and it just received a major endorsement.

Meg Cabot, author of the young-adult book series that inspired the 2001 movie *The Princess Diaries* and its 2004 sequel, recently told the *Hollywood Reporter* that she got a peek at the screenplay for the third big-screen installment.

"I read a script, and it was amazing," she dished. Cabot has seen a few different iterations over the years as the threequel has been in development, but the latest version takes the crown: "I told them not to send anymore, because I love it so much. They don't like it when you tell people what's gonna happen yet. So I was like, 'Better not send me any more scripts!'"

A *Princess Diaries 3* movie has been in the works for ages, but it was shelved following the 2016 death of director Garry Marshall. Disney decided to move forward in 2022, and two years later star Anne Hathaway confirmed she would return as Mia Thermopolis, princess-turned-queen of Genovia.

Over that time, there were several scripts, "and I think this one that I most recently read is my favorite," Cabot gushed to *THR*. "Fingers crossed that's the one they're going to use, but it's a really fun idea, and I'm one hundred percent behind it."

Indeed, Hathaway recently confirmed to ** that "we're constantly working on it." She added that "expectations are very, very high, and if you're going to do it, you have to knock it out of the park."

'Princess Diaries 3' in progress as Anne Hathaway confirms 'we're chipping away' at script

Cabot's book series comprises 12 core novels, four novellas, and four more companion novels. After initially concluding the *Princess Diaries* series in 2009, she picked it back up in 2015 with *Royal Wedding* and most recently published 2023's *The Quarantine Princess Diaries*.

Although *Princess Diaries 2* wasn't based on any of her novels — the script was written by Shonda Rhimes pre-*Grey's Anatomy* — Cabot hinted to *THR* the script for *Princess Diaries 3* involves "some book things."

When Hathaway spoke to EW about the film earlier this year, while promoting *The Devil Wears Prada 2*, the actress confirmed that "the intention is to make *Princess Diaries* hopefully next" and her team has been "chipping away at the script."

At the time, Hathaway was quietly pregnant with her third child, news that may or may not affect *The Princess Diaries 3* and its storyline.

Coincidentally, Hathaway's first pregnancy in 2016 paused the threequel's production, according to Marshall, who helmed the first two films. "So we have to wait until she has the baby and then I think we're going to do it," he told PEOPLE.

A decade later, *Crazy Rich Asians* writer Adele Lim has signed on to direct *Princess Diaries 3*.

"As a die-hard fan of the original *Princess Diaries*, I'm beyond excited to be a part of bringing the third iteration of this beloved franchise to life," Lim said in a statement. "We look forward to celebrating its core tenants of female power, joy, and mentorship with audiences worldwide."
